Happy New Year, friends! FHO is 16 years old, so to commemorate that big anniversary, I will be doing a giveaway (more below). But first, it’s time once again for our monthly romp through the peer-reviewed literature. I want to point out two contraception-related articles for those of you who deal with that particular issue: one general overview of what’s new and one on whether there’s a need to double dose obese patients when it comes to ulipristal, which is an important read. So, something a little different in the mix. As always, links go to PubMed abstracts except where otherwise indicated.
As for the giveaway, I’m going to gift one early conference registration to this year’s IAFN conference in Omaha. It is transferrable, so if you aren’t sure yet whether you can go, no problem–I will just need to know a final name by the time early registration closes. To enter, just let me know in the comments one thing you are going into this new year with. Doesn’t need to be a resolution. Attitude, ideas, stuff, whatever. Make me laugh, make me think, make me tear up–I’ll choose one winner on the evening of 20 January, so make sure you enter by then. [EDIT: Congratulations, Rachel Henderson! I’ll be reaching out to you to talk details.] In the meantime, I’m off to Kentucky, and then on to England, so I have some packing to do 🙂
Happy reading. See you back here next month.

Heading into 2025 with a goal of opening a satellite center in another Rural Community!
It’s a continuation from my goal in 2024 but I’ve learned that strong foundations take time to build (2024) and we reap the benefits of building strong foundations/relationships some time after(2025)
This year I have committed to acknowledging the people sent to me when I need them most that in past years I have failed to recognize because they are not presented in obvious pretty little packages. They are hidden jewels that have saved me in my darkest moments never asking for praise or gratitude and it is my responsibility to then be that same jewel for others in a similar fashion. Jen, its people like you. For all my heroes, I see you. Now. And forever. #leadershiprequirescourage
With the changing political climate, my 2025 goal is to be brave and voice out loud that America is made up of people who are different, who look different, who have different backgrounds and who live different. I plan to call out unfairness. I hope I am more successful than my failed weight loss resolutions!
Jen what a great idea on conference ticket. I plan to go but I am orienting a fairly new RN to replace me, yes I said that, I need to go PRN still want to see patients and stay connected just not to the point of 7 days a week.
Her name is Natasha Stephens she is an IAFN member and finishing her BSN then will work on Certifications.
My goal is to stay positive and try to be at peace.
Congratulations Les! You deserve this!! I’m so thankful for all that you have taught us baby FNEs!!! Ohio is very grateful to have you Here!!!
Hi Jen,
I am going into this new year with fingers crossed, fortitude, many pounds of chocolate, a strong support system, a sense of humor, a wish and a prayer!
Hi! I’m going into 2025 with goals of positivity, mental clarity, and spiritual peace.
Heading into 2025 controlling what I can control. We are moving overseas and will be transient 6 months prior to that … embracing the time with stateside family and friends … knowing everything is phase, good or bad.
Hi Jen! I am going into 2025 with prayers of guidance and protection on my journey with many aspirations- both personal and professional. I hope to embrace the present, live in the moment and spread joy to those who cross my path. I plan to fill my days with as much music possible and attend more live concerts. (My love is reggae-an instant vacation vibe). May the financial Gods be in my favor as I continue to save for the purchase of a house- its a rough market for byers lately!
Safe travels, Jen. May you have a great travel playlist!
-Grace
I have been trying to start out each day thinking of my purpose or goal for that day. Whether it is my purpose in life or just for that day. Whenever frustrating situations come up, I try to re-focus myself around that purpose.
Happy 16th Birthday to FHO! I usually don’t have New Years resolutions, but this year I happen to have just a few, and I’m happy to share! My goal is to have a stronger core so I can tele ski into my 5th decade and beyond, so I’m planning to find a brief core strengthening routine that I can do regularly. And, my kids are finally at an age when they can start watching Spielberg movies, so another goal is to have “Family Movie Nights” and watch as many Spielberg movies as we can!
HBD FHO! What an achievement. I am headed in to 2025 with a plan for growth and focus.
Happy birthday FHO! Thank you for this opportunity to enter! I’m looking forward to a more restful year ahead (hopefully)and creating more balance!
I am listening to the audible book Impact Players by Liz Wizeman and in that book she quotes hockey great Wayne Gretzky on his strategy for success on the ice. He said, “Skate to where the puck is going to be.” This resonated so strongly with me that I am carrying it into 2025. I am looking to the future. Not where are world is right now but where do I need/want to be.
HBD FHO! I’m going through 2025 with confidence and grace!
16 years, wow!! What a contribution to helping so many of us keep up with some really great articles for our practice. My goal is to provide that same practice development to my staff -to highlight one article/practice update per month AND follow up with discussions on the implications of that article. Thank you for the reminder!
For the year 2025, I will be working on becoming a certified SANE-A, and then work on becoming a certified SANE-P. My goal is to always continue my learning and knowledge everyday. And to lead by example for those around me. Every person that I come in contact with teaches me at least one thing that has shaped me to the person I am today. I am thankful for every person that has contributed to my success and happiness along the way.
This year I have decided that 2025 will be a year of growth and trying new things. I have committed to a new role at work, and I am about to take the SANE pediatrics course to better serve our adolescent patients.
Thank you for 16 years of this wonderful resource and you wisdom!
I’m going into 2025 with optimism and a quest to find more rest and balance.
Although I don’t need conference registration I’m commenting so if I win I can gift to a colleague, finding funding to go to conferences when you work in rural communities is tough! I’m going into 2025 with hope and a promise to myself to take some time to rest when I need it and to disconnect during that time. Happy new year!
Hello, Jen! I am going into 2025 as a newly certified SANE-A and SANE-P, and as an advanced forensic nurse who has such a sense of pride and gratitude! I mean, how amazing is it that I get to get up and practice forensics daily, impact lives, testify to protect my precious patients, and also educate my community?! If you would have told me in 2021 that I would soon sell my medical practice, leave my home in Michigan, move to a sunny, warm island in Southeast Texas, and practice forensics daily, I would have laughed so loudly…but here I am! Thank God for knowing the plans He has for us! I love this work, I am honored to serve in this role, and proud to be surrounded by amazing forensic colleagues! In 2025, I will bring the gratitude and pride I feel to each patient interaction in a trauma-informed way! Looking forward to another amazing year of learning!
Happy birthday FHO and thank you for sharing all your expertise. Last weekend I just got a tattoo down my arm that says Hold On Pain Ends (HOPE). It’s a daily reminder to keep moving forward and whatever is bringing you down will eventually have an end. Look to tomorrows possibilities and hold onto the privilege of caring for our most vulnerable patients when they need it most!
Hello Jen, thanks so much for doing this! I’m not a new nurse but I’m new to Forensics. I’ve wanted to do this for a very long time and my hospital gave me the chance. I’m so excited to build my knowledge and my community. I think the community is truly key to doing this work. My goal for 2025 is to learn everything I can, to volunteer every chance I get, and to try and be a better nurse every chance I get.
