It’s time once again for Articles of Note, our monthly romp through the peer-reviewed literature. Just a reminder, this is not an exhaustive list, only a list of articles that have caught my attention. Yes, I know other articles were published in the last 30 days that don’t appear here. I assure you if I listed everything, this list would be at least three times what it is now. If there is an article you really feel needs to be included, add a comment with the citation. No need to email me with it (you’re welcome to, but I don’t edit these once they’re published). I would love to crowd-source more of this, so happy to have anyone’s additions in the comments.

All links go to PubMed, except where otherwise indicated (unfortunately, there were very few free full-text options this month). Of particular note in this round, Brady, et al., “The Darker the Skin, the Greater the Disparity? Why a Reliance on Visible Injuries Fosters Health, Legal, and Racial Disparities in Domestic Violence Complaints Involving Strangulation”. Its premise is an interesting one I am still chewing on.

Happy New Year! It’s time once again for Articles of Note, our monthly traipse through the newly peer-reviewed science. A somewhat manageable list today, but a couple of items that I’d like to point out–particularly two different articles on capacity/consent (Mientkiewicz, L., & Grover, P.; Factora, R., & Hashmi, A. Z.) and an array of brain injury articles focusing on strangulation, IPV, and child abuse. As always, most articles lead to PubMed abstracts, although there are a decent number of free full-text articles this month.

Thanks to everyone who has already purchased the newest FHO publication, Injury Following Penetrative Sexual Contact. I appreciate all of the interest. If you would like your own copy and haven’t yet purchased one, you can find it here.

It’s time once again for Articles of Note, our monthly romp through the peer-reviewed literature. I know it’s the holiday season, but publishing doesn’t rest. It’s the usual robust list for us. A few of the items are free full-text, but the rest of the links will take you to PubMed abstracts. If you are having trouble getting a hold of articles, let me know, and I will see what I can do to assist. A few things that may be of particular interest: Shaw and colleagues’ article on the move to teleSANE in response to the pandemic; Santa-Rosa and colleagues’ examination of consent issues in sexual assault patients; and Muir and colleagues’ examination of neuropsychological and balance issues in IPV-related strangulation victims.

I am personally winding down here at FHO headquarters. The last thing to do is put the final edits on the newest research compilation now that peer review is completed. It will be released the first week of the new year, so keep your eyes open for that. I hope all of you have a happy, restful, and relaxed holiday season, however you celebrate. It’s time once again for Articles of Note, our monthly romp through the newly published peer-reviewed literature. Let me first apologize for missing October’s edition–I lost my brother last month, and as you can imagine, a lot of things got missed. But we are back, we have a full complement of articles for you to peruse and some other business to take care of, as well.

As always, almost all articles link to PubMed abstracts (I think we have just a few full text articles this month). Please let me know if you’re having trouble accessing anything and I’ll see what I can do to assist.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, it’s also time for our annual virtual gift exchange over on Elfster. There is still time to join us–you can register until November 26th. And finally, the newest FHO research compilation is ready for peer review, which means I could use a few readers. This compilation is on injury from both consensual and nonconsensual sexual contact (so it is, in part, an update to my very 1st research compilation, plus an entirely new compilation, all in one). Stopping in quickly to post this month’s Articles of Note and tell you all I can’t wait to see those of you who are going to be at IAFN in Dallas. Good morning from the DMV, where I am about to be ping-ponging around the globe. I am happily typing this from my dining room table (office) before I trot off to the Army JAG School in Charlottesville for a quick trip. I will then make my way to Chicago, and from there go straight to Italy before we chat again. The Fall travel push is in full effect. I have a fresh supply of Clorox wipes and N95 masks for the planes/trains/cabs, plus a relatively new Away carry-on that will fit a full two weeks’ worth of work clothes (for my travel peeps, I cannot recommend that bag enough). Your girl is prepared.

But we’re here because it’s time once again for Articles of Note, our monthly romp through the newly published, peer-reviewed literature. This month, a few things to point out: several articles on men as victims of intimate partner and sexual violence, and a couple on students: preparing healthcare students to address intimate partner violence in their practices (Sawyer, et al.) and looking at nursing students knowledge about and readiness to address IPV (Shaqiqi, et al). Also, a nice showing of pubs by friends, which you have to like because we love to see friends doing great things. Links lead to PubMed abstracts, except where indicated. Good morning from a swampy Washington, DC. I’m a bit late getting this month’s Articles of Note posted, but I have been on the road pretty much nonstop since I last posted, so I cut myself some slack on Friday when I got back to town. I head to Colorado for a week in Eagle County on Saturday, but this week is fairly light, which means I will have some reading time on my hands. I will also finally get a chance to really dig into the next offering for the FHO shop.

But for now, here’s what we’re looking at for July’s Articles of Note: quite a bit of free full text for those of you who don’t have library access. And in particular, quite a bit of human trafficking-focused work published in this round-up. You’ll notice that most of those are freely available, but if there are others you cannot access, reach out and I’ll see what I can do to assist.

Good morning! I am on my way to the airport, headed up to Michigan State for a clinical skills lab, but I wanted to get this posted before I walked out the door. It’s time once again for Articles of Note, our monthly waltz through the newly published peer-reviewed literature. June’s list is truly a mash-up of all manner of topics–if screening tools are your jam, there are several validation studies in the mix, and a super-interesting modeling study on hyoid bone fractures. Next week I am back in the DMV for some local work for a change, and then I head to Budapest, a city I have never visited. It’s time once again for Articles of Note, my monthly waltz through the newly published peer-reviewed literature. This one may be the longest one yet, so buckle up, it’s substantial. There is a lot to work through, and I’d like to point your attention to a number of articles that address programmatic issues: Mudrick, et al., How do states inform nurses of their policies for mandatory reporting of child maltreatment?; Rebbe, et al., The measurement of intimate partner violence using international classification of diseases diagnostic codes; Sharko, et al., State-by-state variability in adolescent privacy laws. Of course, there are also plenty of clinically-focused articles, as well. Most links will take you to PubMed abstracts, but there are a number of free full text articles to find. It’s time once again for Articles of Note, our monthly romp through the newly published peer-reviewed literature. Nothing brief about this month’s (is there ever?), but a few things stood out, including our colleagues over at Physicians for Human Rights (Mishori, et al) and their article on training non-forensic experts on conducting medical-forensic exams, and our Australian colleagues (Williamson, et al) and their lack of vascular injury findings in nonfatal strangulation. Lots of good reads, as always, although fair warning–very few free full text articles. Please let me know if you need assistance getting a hold of articles, and I will see what I can do to assist.

This is going live a day early because tomorrow evening starts Passover, and I will spend tomorrow prepping and cooking for a significant crowd. This weekend many of you will be doing the same, many more of you will be enjoying Easter celebrations, and of course, some of my readers are already in the midst of what I hope is a peaceful and blessed Ramadan. Whatever your tradition, including simply enjoying a spring (or fall–I see you Australia and Brazil) weekend, I hope it is a relaxing one, and that somewhere along the way it includes a great meal and some people you adore.

Good morning and happy new year! A new year and our 13th anniversary here at FHO– 13 years of nerdiness on our little site. Amazing how many of you have been with us from the beginning. This year in honor of that, and in honor of the fact that we are heading into year 3 of the pandemic, a new giveaway. But first, here’s our monthly overview of what’s new and relevant (at least to me) in the monthly peer-reviewed literature. It’s full this month, my friends, so put aside ample time for this one. Allow me to point out there are a few different articles specific to SANE training. Plus the Journal of Head Trauma and Rehabilitation has a special issue on IPV, so you’ll find multiple articles related to TBI and IPV. As always, links take you to PubMed abstracts. Greetings from Eagle, CO, where I am working for a few days (that photo is the view when I wake up). I’m in Monterey, CA, Garmisch, Germany, Ft. Lee, VA, and Salt Lake City, UT, before we chat again, so I guess work travel is back for real for real. I’ll take it, rude travelers, COVID tests, and constant masking notwithstanding. It’s nice to not just be at my dining room table writing (although I am doing that too).

For all of you who sent approving emails liking the idea of a cocktail-laced testimony webinar series, thanks for the feedback. I think we will kick it off in the new year when several of these writing projects will be done(ish), and I can devote time to launching the series properly. If anyone has a suggestion for a clever name for the series, though, I’d love to hear it. I am not good at coming up with these sorts of things.

Greetings from PDX, where I am finishing a delightful long weekend away with my girlchild. We stole a few days together before she goes back for her 3rd year of college and I return to the road for teaching and trials. Happy Pride, friends–not sure how it’s already halfway through June, but here we are. I’m splitting my time this month between DC and Charlottesville, so it feels relatively luxurious. Time with my girlchild, who lives in Cville, and a relatively calm month after what has been a wild ride in my household for the last few months. My biggest project still has me tethered to my laptop, writing on IPV, although I am pleased to announce that if you have seen the latest issue of JFN, you also noticed that I wrote a love letter to the courtroom, which appears as the guest editorial in the current issue. I hope you’ll read it. It’s one of the most enjoyable pieces of writing I have done in some time.

Of course, we’re here because it’s time for Articles of Note, our monthly romp through the peer-reviewed literature. For the folx doing IPV work, in particular, it feels like a really rich month. There are also several pieces on sexual assault victims and believability by law enforcement, not all of which are in the same journal, so just an interesting mini-thread there this month. As always, most links go to PubMed, unless otherwise specified as free full-text.
